Privacy Policy

Overview

AnkGate is designed with privacy in mind. The app's blocking logic runs locally on your device, and we collect only limited operational analytics needed to understand setup success, app reliability, and adoption trends.

Data Collection

AnkGate sends limited analytics events to our self-hosted infrastructure. This may include:

- Anonymous install identifier (random UUID)
- App version, Android version, timezone, and monitor status
- Permission setup progress (which required permissions are granted)
- Service lifecycle and heartbeat events used to estimate active installs
- Download tracking events from our download endpoint, including IP-derived country and city

We do not collect deck names, blocked app package names, message contents, or account credentials.

Data Stored on Your Device

AnkGate stores your preferences locally on your device using Android SharedPreferences. This includes selected decks, blocked apps, and anonymous analytics identifiers/queues used for reliable delivery. Local app data is deleted when you uninstall the app.

Permissions

AnkGate requests the following Android permissions, all of which are used solely for core functionality:

- Usage Access: To detect which app is in the foreground so it can be blocked if needed.
- Display Over Other Apps: To show the blocking screen when a blocked app is opened.
- AnkiDroid Database Access: To read due card counts from your AnkiDroid decks.
- Notifications: Required by Android for the foreground service that monitors app usage.
- Boot Completed: To restart monitoring after a device reboot.

Children's Privacy

AnkGate does not intentionally collect personal information from children.

Retention and Security

Analytics data is stored on infrastructure we control. Access to internal dashboards is restricted to devices on our Tailscale network. We retain aggregated analytics for product monitoring and may remove raw event data over time.

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new "last updated" date.
